Home Party & Direct Sales
Home Party Plan Consultant
Are you thinking of starting your own home business? Becoming a home party / direct sales consultant
is a great start option for those who want a low start up cost. Also a fast option, your business starts
almost right away. Benefits include brochures / catalogs and sometimes even personalized websites.
One myth associated with direct selling is that you need to already have a list a clients.
Before you Start - Things to Think About
1. You don't need to know people to make your business work or make money. Check our tips on
promoting your business.
2. You should like the products you are selling.
3. Make a list of all the home party plan companies you are interested in. Do a general over view of
each company. Then chose your top three or four consultant/representative opportunities.
4. Now that you have your short list, do an in depth study on what each company has to offer.
Examples of what to look for:
How much is the start up cost? Are there different kits to choose from? What are in the kits?
Do you get your own personal website?
How you allowed to sell the products? - Websites? Home parties? Flea markets? Etc
How much do you have to order? Do you have to keep inventory?
What is the sales quota per month? What do you need to do to stay an active consultant?
What is commission rate? How do get paid? What is the schedule to get paid? Monthly? Right away?
What are the restrictions on advertising? Can you do paid advertisement? Can you advertise on
websites? At the local bulletin board? In the paper?
5. Make a list of friends and families who would be interested in products you decided to sell, both for
purchasing the products and hosting a party for you. Remember you only need a few parties and
customers to get your business started.
6. Treat your business like a business. Have a separate bank account. This way you know what your
are spending and what you are receiving. Get software to help keep track of your spending and your
receiving. And keep your information updated (spending, receiving, expenses). This will be especially
helpful when it comes to tax time.
6. You only get out what you put in. Working from home is still work. Make calls, promote your business,
provide good customer service.
7. Take a Break. There may be days that you are
unsure, or things are not going the way you
planned, or expected. Take a break, decide if
this is something you really want to do, if it is
keep going.
